Goal Setting: Blast your dreams into reality by asking yourself the right questions.

How many times have you fantasised about being rich and famous or even living in that dream house you’ve always wanted. You know those great fantasies. The ones that really get you excited and give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside but that you only see as just that, fantasies.

Have you ever asked yourself WHY it’s only a fantasy and WHY it can’t become reality?

So, why can’t it become reality?

For a couple of reasons mainly.

First and most importantly, you haven’t DECIDED that you’ll have it no matter what and no doubt about it.

Second, you haven’t made it a priority. Now, by priority I mean you haven’t set it as a goal or objective or if you have, you haven’t followed through with it.

Now I know you can come up with hundreds other excuses (hem, reasons) why it can’t come true, but the bottom line is, you haven’t decided to make it a priority and haven’t come up with a plan to make it happen.

In previous posts in this series, we talked about the importance of goal setting and what it can do for you. So now I think it’s time to take a look at why you might not be setting goals and if you are, why you don’t follow through.

I have 5 question here to ask yourself when your setting goals that will help you dial in your goal setting skills and give you the needed push to get started or the answers to hold back and study the objective better.

How am I going to Get Started?

[su_service title = ” Get Started ” icon =” icon: lightbulb-o” icon_color=”#082574″]One of the biggest thing that stops people from attaining their goals is that they don’t know how to get started. Goal setting and planning is a skill just like any other and most of us aren’t good at it. Like we said before, it’s a skill that needs practicing!

How bad do I really want?

[su_service title = ” What I want” icon =” icon: lightbulb-o” icon_color=”#082574″]When you answer this question honestly, it can be an eye-opener. You might figure out that you’re not ready yet to make the necessary changes that it take to reach your goals. Sometimes we like the idea of our goal much more than actually working towards it or living it. The best way to find out if this is true or not is to realistically consider everything that you’ll need to do and sacrifice to achieve your goal. Look for people who have done it, find out what they went through and then ask yourself if it’s worth it to you.

Am I afraid of something?

[su_service title = “Fear” icon =” icon: lightbulb-o” icon_color=”#082574″]Often, it’s fear that’s stopping you from getting started. In order to reach your goal and make a big change in your life, you need to get out of your comfort zone. You may also be afraid of failure. Aren’t we all? And get this, many people are afraid to succeed and attain their goals. Success can be a scary thing and thats way we can fall victim to self-sabotage. Is this you?

Who’s goal or objective is it anyway?

[su_service title = ” Is it mine ” icon =” icon: lightbulb-o” icon_color=”#082574″]Is this goal really yours or have you taken on someone else’s just to please them? Many times we take on others goals or internalize the things others want for us just to make them happy or to shut them up. They may be a family member, a romantic partner, or even people at work. When the goal isn’t really yours to begin with, it’s much easier to buckle under pressure when things get tough. Ask yourself if it’s what you really want or what they really want.

Can you make the time commitment necessary?

[su_service title = “Commit ” icon =” icon: lightbulb-o” icon_color=”#082574″]You can learn how to manage your time better and shift your schedule around, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. You need to set a realistic timeframe for your goal and then figure out what you’ll need to do each day in order to achieve it. I like to call it “micro-goal setting”. You set small goals within your “macro-goal” which create the necessary environment to achieve the ultimate objective.

When you’re starting out with goal setting just keep these questions in mind as you go through the process and you’ll make much wiser decisions about what it is you want and how to achieve it.
